An event was held recently on the campus of Yale Divinity School to honor the ministry of William Sloane Coffin, Jr. Coffin served for many years as the Yale Chaplain before moving on and eventually being named as the senior minister at the historic Riverside Church in New York City. For many people - myself included - Coffin has served as an inspiration. Who is William Sloane Coffin? PBS' Religion and Ethics Newsweekly reports:
In a lifetime of activism, he has opposed racial segregation, the war in Vietnam and nuclear weapons. As chaplain at Yale University and senior minister at Riverside Church in New York, Coffin was known for his powerful sermons and prominent public ministry. He is often controversial, but his influence on American Protestantism has been significant.
Part of the Yale celebration included discussion panels on "Faith and Activism: The Legacy of the '60s Generation" and "The Future of Ministry in the ‘Prophetic Tradition." The video from those panels - plus the remarks made by Coffin - are now online and can be found here.
This living legend allowed me to interview him last year for this blog. You can find that interview by clicking here.
All of the information from the Coffin event at Yale is really worth watching.
