"Faces Of Christ"

When talking about Jesus I often mention the artistic representations made of a man who lived long before photography (a result of all the time I spent studying under Damayanthi Niles). In American churches, for example, Jesus is often depicted as a white man with blue eyes – an impossibility considering where he came from. So think what it must have been like when Americans brought African slaves over and forced them to convert to Christianity while informing them that God’s son was a white man. Images can be problematic…even oppressive. But they can also be inspiring. The Episcopal Church USA has an online exhibit exploring some of the images of Jesus in the Anglican tradition. Take a look at a few of the different ways Jesus is seen across the globe.
