Don't Ask Don't Tell: Time To End A Moral Disgrace
Thursday, December 16, 2010
The U.S. House has voted (again) to repeal Don't Ask Don't Tell (the law that has led to increased persecution of gays and lesbians in the military). It appears the U.S. Senate will do the same. That's good news. We can pray that marriage equality will be the next big step forward but it will take a lot of work to overcome the hateful and bigoted advocacy of political groups like Focus on the Family and the Family Research Council. The General Synod of the United Church of Christ called for full marriage equality in the United States in 2005.
Discrimination against people based on their sexual orientation is no better than discrimination against people based on the color of their skin. It wasn't that long ago that African-Americans were not allowed to serve with white soldiers and inter-racial marriage was outlawed. Conservative Christians, sadly, sided with white supremacists during the battle for racial equality just as many are now fighting against equality for gays and lesbians. Such discrimination is sinful. The work of the church during these times should be justice building and reconciliation to help heal the wounds of division.
Repealing DADT would show that we are moving as a nation in the right direction.
